What are supplements?

Dietary Supplements include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, herbals and botanicals, and many other products. Dietary supplements are what the words suggest – they are supplementary to your daily diet. They are an insurance policy should you not be getting all the ‘building blocks’ essential for your body’s daily healthy operation.

Dietary supplements must be ingested through the mouth, and come in many different forms from capsules, traditional tablets, powders, soft gels, chewy gummy, or even drinks and energy bars. Most of the popular supplements include vitamins E and D, minerals such as calcium and iron, herbs like Echinacea and garlic, as well as specialty products like glucosamine, probiotics, and fish oils.

Why is it important to supplement?

The National Institutes of Health explains the effectiveness of dietary supplements in that, “if you don’t eat a nutritious variety of foods, some supplements might help you get adequate amounts of essential nutrients. However, supplements can’t take the place of the variety of foods that are important to a healthy diet.

Scientific evidence shows that some dietary supplements are beneficial for overall health and for managing some health conditions. For example, calcium and vitamin D are important for keeping bones strong and reducing bone loss; folic acid decreases the risk of certain birth defects; and omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils might help some people with heart disease.”

Where do I start?

The best way to ensure you are receiving the proper vitamins and minerals to stay healthy is by proper supplementation. A few of the most basic, and in many cases, most important and beneficial for almost everyone, would be a strong Multi-Vitamin, Vitamin D, Fish Oil, as well as some form of a “Green’s Drink”, which is essentially a whole food supplement that provides you with ample amount (about 13 -15 servings) of fruits and vegetables per scoop – providing the best variety of antioxidants. Antioxidants protect you from inflammation within your cells.

Depending on your body’s mechanics, you may need to begin a supplement regiment to either maintain or to provide your body with what it may be lacking to allow yourself to be the healthiest you can be!
